Shomi… Errr… Show Me?

The DigitalGrit has taken a long look at the much-ballyhooed (by Shaw/Rogers) “Shomi” ‘Netflix alternative’.  We logged in, and tried several hours of viewing, after (with much difficulty) finding something we had not already seen on Netflix Canada, or network sites. What was the consumer expectation of Shomi – a service provided by cable providers who already had you paying for all their services, including premium channels like HBO, and various sports networks?  Well, first of all, a user would expect a lower price (considering users were already cable subscribers).  We would expect a flawless user experience, considering the fact that the cable giants were...

We received the Chromecast a few weeks back.  It comes beautifully, yet simply packaged, with everything you need to get going.  We set it up on the “Media Player” HDMI input on the back of the Marantz, and it was discovered promptly.  For some reason the Marantz did not like this dongle paired with the CD or Game inputs. If you are plugging the unit into a warm-running home theatre receiver, be sure to use the HDMI Extender in the...

OTA (Over The Air) HDTV – Free If You Want It (Pt.2)

We discussed ‘cutting the cord’ for your cable a couple of weeks ago. Tomorrow, Google Canada officially makes it a whole lot easier with the Canadian release of Chromecast. This little dongle that plugs into one of your video HDMI inputs (back of your TV or A/V Receiver) does all the things standard streaming channel boxes do, but adds one more neat trick: The ability to display content of ANY Google Chrome browser tab to your TV. This is a beta version of this capability, but imagine being able to stream/display ANY web content on your TV! This used to be a task most people needed a computer hooked up to your video device. For $39 (paid one time) in...
